Serving El Segundo

Therapy & Mental Health Care in El Segundo

El Segundo has a small residential population and an enormous daytime one. Northrop Grumman, Boeing, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, the Air Force base, the Aerospace Corporation, plus AT&T, Mattel, DaVita, and two professional sports franchises. More than half the satellites in orbit were built here. Most of the people we see from El Segundo work here rather than live here.

The question nobody asks out loud

If you hold a clearance, you have probably wondered whether seeing a therapist puts it at risk, and you have probably not asked anyone. It is the most common reason we hear for putting off care in this part of the South Bay, and it is usually based on something a coworker said years ago.

The actual position is more reassuring than the rumor. Executive Order 12968 states that behavioral health counseling is not, on its own, grounds to deny or revoke a clearance. Some treatment is reportable on the SF-86 and some categories are specifically exempt, including counseling strictly for marital, family, or grief issues not related to violence by you. But reportable is not the same as disqualifying, and the government's own guidance has been consistent that seeking help voluntarily reads as good judgment.

Worth knowing: under DoD policy your supervisor, commander, and security manager are not authorized to question you about care disclosed under Question 21, and unauthorized questioning can be reported to the DoD Inspector General.

This is general information rather than legal or HR advice. For your specific circumstances, your facility security officer is the person to ask. We raise it here because avoiding treatment over a misunderstanding has its own cost, and that cost usually shows up in the work.

What this work does to people

Aerospace, defense, and the corporate offices around them share a particular profile: long program cycles, high consequence for error, schedule pressure that arrives in waves, and a culture where competence is the currency and admitting strain feels like a withdrawal. People here are generally very good at continuing to function, which is exactly why it tends to be late in the process when someone finally calls.

What we see most is burnout that has been reframed as a busy quarter for three years running, anxiety that shows up as sleep loss and irritability before it ever shows up as worry, drinking that has become the transition ritual between work and home, and relationships worn thin by someone who is present in the house and not really in it.

Built around a workday

Our office is at 2200 Pacific Coast Highway in Hermosa Beach, roughly ten minutes down the coast. Close enough that an early-morning or after-work session is realistic rather than aspirational, and virtual sessions make a lunch-hour appointment genuinely possible from a conference room, a parked car, or a home office on a remote day.

We are private-pay, which for people in this industry has a specific advantage: nothing routes through an employer, and no benefits administrator sits between you and your clinician.

The full practice

Individual therapy, couples work, psychiatry and medication management, EMDR and trauma care, ADHD and neuropsychological testing, and addiction treatment, coordinated under one team.

Getting started

Start with a free 15-minute consultation. If the clearance question is the thing holding you up, say so on that call. It is a reasonable question and you will get a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.

Questions

Frequently asked

Will going to therapy affect my security clearance?

Executive Order 12968 states that seeking behavioral health counseling is not, by itself, a reason to deny or revoke a clearance. Some counseling is reportable on the SF-86 and some is specifically exempt, but reporting it is not the same as losing a clearance, and adjudicators have repeatedly indicated that voluntarily seeking help reads as responsible rather than disqualifying. This is general information, not legal or HR advice. For your own situation, your facility security officer is the right person to ask.

What is actually exempt from SF-86 Question 21?

Counseling strictly for marital, family, or grief issues not related to violence by you is exempt. So is counseling for adjustment from a military combat environment, and counseling received as the victim of a sexual assault. Outside those categories, treatment is generally reportable. We are not the authority on your paperwork and we will not pretend to be, but we would rather you have the real answer than avoid care over a rumor.

Can my supervisor ask me about it?

Under DoD policy, commanders, supervisors, and security managers are not authorized to question you about psychological health care disclosed in response to Question 21. Unauthorized questioning can be reported to the DoD Inspector General Hotline at 800-424-9098.

Can I be seen around a workday?

That is most of what we schedule for here. Early morning before the day starts, a lunch-hour virtual session from a conference room or your car, or an evening slot on the way home. Our office is ten minutes down PCH, which makes a real appointment possible on a real workday.

I do not think I am depressed. I think I am just fried.

That is worth taking seriously rather than dismissing. Burnout and depression overlap enough to be confused and are not treated identically, and the difference matters. A consultation can usually clarify which conversation you are having.

Do you work with employers or EAPs?

We work directly with individuals. If your employer offers an EAP you are welcome to use it, and we are a private-pay practice outside of that, which some people prefer precisely because nothing routes through their employer.

When you're ready, a conversation is the place to begin.
